[RC] WNV - k s swigart

I am curious. For those of you who have their horses in
areas where WNV has established itself...do you still
vaccinate for the disease?

It seems to me (although here my understanding may be
wrong), that if my horses live in the place where the
disease is endemic (which I understand is the case in
Florida), then my horses would be constantly being exposed
to the disease and getting "innoculated" by being constantly
exposed to the disease in the environment and constantly be
producing antibodies to ward it off.

What purpose then, in doing booster shots?

I can understand doing the initial series (and Ido them on
my horses, not because I think they are at risk here in
California right now, but because I may be taking them to
places where they might be at risk) to provide the horse
with immunity before the first time it is exposed to the
disease so that it can mount a sophisticated response the
first time it is exposed.

It seems to me, that horses in Florida (and other
places....like the West Nile for example...where the disease
is endemic) are no longer "naive populations" (whether they
have been vaccinated or not); and it is only naive
populations that are particularly susceptible to the
disease.

Am I misunderstanding something?
