Re: [RC] Nutrena Empower - Typef

I have rather a picky eater in my new horse. My others are all vacuums and
will eat ANYTHING. I've had the new one 5 weeks now and still can't figure
out what he likes. I've thrown rye grass, absolutely lucsious oat hay, and
alfalfa at him, sometimes all at once since I can't figure out what he'll
eat. Some days he'll eat it, other days he acts like he doesn't want any of
it. He eventually eats it all, but it takes him all day to finish his
breakfast and all night to finish his dinner. He'll eat a few bites and walk
away for an hour, then come back and eat a few more.

The only thing so far, that he'll finish in one "sitting" is a Senior food.
Or Dynamite Complete Feed or the Nutrina equivalent. Or beet pulp, just
plain. He seems to always eat the beet pulp at home but if I'm trailering
away, he'll eat some of it and leave the rest. I sure Surelytes and he
doesn't care one way or the other whether the beet pulp has it or not.

He may be totally normal, but he freaks me out because I'm so used to the
rest of the lot. Fortunately, he's in his own pen and doesn't have to hurry,
otherwise, I don't think he'd get anything to eat LOL! My mares can finish
their breakfast in an hour flat and then be looking around for more.

He does, however, really like pasture, so I've been letting him out there
for a couple of hours every other day or so. It's not big enough to support
5 horses so they all have to share a little as more of a treat than anything
else.

Right now, I'm looking for anything that I think will help him be a happy
camper and maintain his good health. The Nutrina Empower seems like a good
addition and he really likes it. I'm not feeding him a lot of it at this
point since I just got it (approx. 1 lb.) but I'm feeding him anything that
he will eat at this point.

After we came back from my first 30 on him, he ate pretty good for several
days. And I figured I was over worrying about it. But now he's back to
picking again.

Does anyone else have a horse like this? Should I be worrying that he has st
omach problems or should I count myself lucky that he knows how to spread
his food out over a longer period of time? (Wouldn't THAT be nice?)

:) Jackie

Don't ever forget >>>You can win rides on nothing more than
ample forage, unlimited clean water and some electrolytes!
The special feeds are not absolutely necessary.

I'm looking for more information on Nutrina's >Empower ...
I bought a bag
yesterday. "Sounds" good. >Anyone using it?

I am, and I like it *very* much. The nicest part is that
the minerals are
already balanced, so you can throw in a pound or two with
your other feed
without having to worry about getting calcium and phosphorus
out of whack
(my primary pet peeve with a lot of rice bran products).
Plus, I like rice
bran mixed with flax seed a whole lot better than I like
rice bran alone,
better fatty acid profile. I think it was very helpful
keeping my kids,
including a 38-year-old mule, fat and blooming this past
winter.

Good stuff, I think you'll like it.
