RE: [RC] Mountain bikes and horse don't mix - Bob Morris

It is not the Mt. Bikes you meet on the trail and can see,
it is those that come tearing down behind you. The ones that
do not want to realize that they spook the horse with the
tire noise and sudden appearance. The ones we can see are
fine but the ones that we didn't see cost considerable
hospital time.

Carry your horse's favorite treats with you when you ride.
Every time
you see a biker, ask him to talk to you, go over and let
your horse
sniff the bike, then ask the biker to give your horse a
treat. Both my
guys are always on the lookout for bikers, hikers with the
big packs on
their back, ATV's, whatever....but they look for them not
because
they're scared....they immmediately head over to mug them
for treats!
<grin> Doesn't take long!

I have not been trail riding a lot in the last 10 years
and have two
rather inexperienced trail horses. We live in the
"Mountain Bike
Capital of the World" and I'm really concerned about
meeting them. My
old mare was used to a lot but would freak if she saw a
bicycle on the
trail, and they weren't nearly so many then. What
techniques has
anyone used to get them used to bikes, especially on
narrow stretches?
