[RC] horses:dirnking vs. swimming - Laurie Durgin

About the drinking thread. Rascal had dunk some in training rides, but one paticularily hot humid day after and hour or so we had a small creek to cross(the kind that are 'rivers' in texas' :} .
Anyway,he started flinging his head in circles like he was playing in the water(or maybe the 'flowing water' was tickling his nostrils ),Then he actually went down in a belly flop,I was left standing with wet feet.
Now I am used to letting him drop his head to cross water and smell it, never a problem, but the next time he started the swirlly thing I pulled his head up (it was only about 1/2 hour out) he tried to pull it down, I let him for a minute, but he did the swirlly thing. I thought he was thinking about going down again, so I pullled him up aghain.

Now I realised I may have just discouraged him from drinking. Does anyone have a problem like this?
Other than jerking them up, how do you stop them from 'swimming" (it's only about 18" deep) and taking them with you?
How do you 'let them play enough to start drinking" or know if it's "down' time? Or should I just "whack em" if he goes down"? And expect I may get a few baths?

Laurie/Rascal who has had the whole summer off with epm first, then a hoof absess, who may now (with shoes back on front) will start slow rehab as soon as the weather drops out of the 90's., Honey who is now trotting under saddle, Scout who is just growing and hanging out.. . .
