I do not agree that you must never strike a horse. I would NEVER punish by yanking on the mouth--that is not acceptable under any circumstances, as it teaches the horse nothing and impairs the soft, trusting carriage of the bit neccessary in any riding discipline. Hitting a horse over the head should be a method of last resort, for instance if the horse is in danger of going over backward with you. Kicking a horse, though, is a natural and acceptable means of correction, as it's the way (along with biting) that horses reprimand each other. They understand this perfectly well. And remember, you cannot possibly kick a horse as hard as they kick each other.-- I turned my Egyptian stallion out with bred mares as a yearling and two-year-old, and everyone was aghast--"Aren't you afraid he'll get kicked??" I knew he would get kicked, since the bred mares wouldn't take any pushy or studdy behavior from a youngster, and boy, did they teach him respect. He is now a mature stallion with a great respect for mares, is very gentle and patient with them; in fact we don't use a chain to breed him, we don't even use a halter.
