[RC] Rough trot - here to stay? - Kristi Schaaf

Hi all -
I'm starting a 5 yoa full Arab (racing-bred but
considered too stocky and was 'culled' as an unbroke 2
yoa). He has decent self-collection and I've worked up
to trotting/cantering. But I'm depressed to find that
his trot is like riding a jack-hammer and his canter
is like sitting in a canoe in a rough sea. I'm really
beat up by the time I get done riding him. My other
two horses (that I also trained) are like SILK at the
trot and canter, so this is quite a rude awakening.
I'm curious about a couple things. One) could it be so
simple that he might he possibly 'grow into' a
smoother horse, or is that pure wishful thinking on my
part? Two) do any of you actually ride endurance on
rough horses? I can't even IMAGINE riding this guy 50
miles - my body would be in pieces. What do you wise
ones think - is a horse rough because of conformation,
or a poor way of moving, or, most likely is it all
connected and a combo of both? Is there any hope for
this guy? Kristi
