[RC] Ferdinand slaughtered? - rides2far

I just got the new issue of The Chronicle and was shocked to read that
Ferdinand, 1986 Kentucky Derby Winner and 1987 Horse of the Year was
slaughtered at age 19 in a Japanese slaughterhouse simply because he
hadn't done too well as a stud. His groom described the 19 year old horse
as having an impeccable temperament but that wasn't "enough to spare him
from the computations of the calculator". I don't have TV so maybe this
was on the news but I was surprised nobody had mentioned it. I find it
very hard to believe that simply because his foals didn't race well that
he was a candidate for "by the pound". Picture getting to cross a nice
Welsh pony or a tough endurance mare with him. Did you all know about
this?
