[RC] [Guest] Low glucose level - Ridecamp Moderator

Shirley Slotka Rosiesmommy@xxxxxxx

Hello,
I would like some input on why a horse would develop low blood sugar levels. My Arabian mare was moved to a new barn about a month ago and was slowly turned out on grass pasture. She is now up to six hours a day. She has been acting unusually quiet( she usually is very curious and can be excitable) and I kept telling the owner of the barn that Rosie was not acting like herself. We thought that getting out for ten hours a day had changed her demeanor. I don't think that she is drinking as much water as she used to due to a sulfur smell to the well water. I had the vet take a blood sample and he discovered that her glucose level was at 41% and he said that normal levels are between 60% and 135%. I was told to add 1/4 cup of molasses to her grain. We had also cut down on her grain amounts due to a bout with laminitis. Can anyone add anything to shed light on what could be happening to deplete her glucose level or what to do about it. I want my old Rosie back. Thank you.
Shirley
