Re: [RC] Bits - Sullivan

This is exactly my th oughts with my 4 year old, that I apparently am
training
(never found a trainer I trusted to send her to). At age 3 we were on and
off
her back briefly 10-15min, just teaching some easy cues (walk off with leg
pressure,
stop and back and lots of bending. Did this all in rope halter.

Stil was taking her on the trail being ponied or running loose.

Went from rope halter to happy mouth snaffle, and still using that for
lessons.

Up to riding her hour max, at age 4, mostly walking, occasional cue into
trot or
short lope, lessons with trainer are going to be low key still, no more than
half
hour.

I am taking it very slow and she is staying extremely calm and cooperative.

Well, I do sort of aspire to using an S-hack...I
figure if I can start my young horse and train her and
never have to go beyond a snaffle and an S-hack, then
I will really feel like I have been successful in her
training. I don't plan on getting on her back before
she is three, but in the mean time, its ground work,
ground work, ground work and responding to light
signals. After dealing with a fractured wrist this
summer and now physiotherapy (because of another horse
that was "supposed to be" a good, broke trail horse),
I want to put everything in my favor and take all the
time she needs and start her right.
I know horses can eat just fine with a bit, my last
horse had no problem eating grass or anything else
with a bit in his mouth. But why not make things
simpler if I can...Of course, if it turns out its a
horrible piece of equipment for my particular horse
then I won't insist on using it just because its my
goal, but if she's fine with it, then that is what I
would like to use. I could be wrong but I don't see
the shanks on an S-hack being as much of a problem for
getting hung up on a bucket as the short shanks on a
bit - the S-hack shanks are higher up on the face, not
right at/below the mouth.
