Re: [RC] Building A Base - SullivanI've done this with my coming 4 year old, since she was 6 months. I only do it on the rides that are under 2 hours, and not terrible fast. She picks her own pace, trots and canters through rough terrain, jumps down banks and over creeks ,and has never had joint or leg problems. She should be very surefooted when I start riding her. On the other hand; sometimes she gets ponied to learn voice commands, carry a saddles, bags of cans, etc. I am inclined to keep doing this another year....with just some very short arena riding and trail (not over 20 min). She is 15.3, about 1100 lbs (Arab/paint), and strong as an ox, but I worry the back is not mature. They learn it can be fun, how to balance on their own without a rider, pick up their feet, etc. Facial expressions and self-carraige can be observed. Ponying can accomplish this too, but running free if allowed, is the most fun!
