Re: [RC] [RC] Blk Walnut trees poisionous to horses? - Laurie Durgin

I've heard that black walnut shavings can cause founder. We always ask , before we buy. I also gardened alot. And read that Black Walnuts put out a toxin that will kill other trees within 50 ft. or so of them.(maybe it was just some kinds of trees). Also Cherry leaves, and red maple, I think are toxic. Laurie and Rascal(who says popluars are not only not toxic, but the best desert salad he has ever eaten.)

Lib has a paint mare that foundered severely from eating just a few leaves
out foxhunting. On the other hand we have them in most of our pastures
without a problem; horses unless they are desparate don't eat them. I
would be fearful that in trying to take them out you would cause more harm.
Notice how many other plants don't grow near them.

Red oak wood shavings can be as toxic as walnut; (also from bad experience -
client's horses was dusted).
