Re: [RC] matching rider size to horse size - Heidi Smith

Can someone please help me figure out what the optimal size horse for me
would be? I'm 5'5" and weigh 130lbs.........

My best advice is to leave size out of the selection process entirely, and
to go out and find the best balanced, best bodied horse you can find. In
the Arabian breed, your odds of finding same are far better in a height
range between 14.1 and 15.1. And guess what--the vast majority of great
endurance horses fall in that range as well. Many of those horses carry HW
riders over 6 feet without batting an eye. My nearly 6' husband and I
(5'1"), both of whom tack in at about the same weight (just shy of HW--he's
a string bean and I'm a Weeble), find that the same horses "fit" us the same
way--not because of their size, but because of their overall balance and
athletic ability. (Or in the case of the ones that don't fit either one of
us--their lack of same.)
