Re: [RC] McClellan saddles in endurance? - Barbara McCrary

McClellans don't fit round-backed horses. My childhood horse was a Morgan
cross with a wide back. The saddle perched above her spine and I had to
fill the slot with a folded blanket for my comfort. I didn't ride more than
7 miles, ever. I thought that was a LONG way. I also didn't trot much.
It's a wonder either of us survived without some permanent damage! However,
at that time I knew nothing about saddle fit, only about what I could
afford. I bought the saddle brand new from Sears, Roebuck for $20. I was
SO proud of it. I still have it, but of course it's in considerable
disrepair. In 1945, Sears must have been selling leftovers from the WW2
cavalry. It's a piece of history, that saddle, with its horsehair cinch.
Maybe the early day cavalry took their saddles from horse to horse, but I'll
bet most of those horses had narrow backs, unlike today's QHs and (some)
Arabs.

Subject: [RC] McClellan saddles in endurance?

Hi,
I have a question for any of you who may have experience with McClellan
saddles. The background for this question is that my custom made saddle
was damaged at the Pyramid Challenge, and the tree was broken. I am
sending it back to Desoto Custom Saddlery to be reepaired. The local
tack repairman suggested to my husband that we get a McClellan saddle as
a "back up" saddle because the army had to use them on so many different
horses. I understand that the calvarymen would change horses every three
months or so, but had to keep the same saddle.
so...I want feedback from folks who ride or have ridden with a
McClellan. I know of three used ones for sale in my area, but don't want
to take a chance on hurting my horses buy purchasing one that won't go
the distance.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Lucie H from South Carolina, and HH Trinity
