RE: [RC] Electrolytes / Heidi, where are you? - Christina Schiro

Heidi, I live in in the Pensacola/Milton area, and there aren't too many
people in this area interesting in ER. I am brand new to this sport. Just
curious as to where in the panhandle you are?

Christina

You're right, Heidi...I didn't give a lot of
background information. My husband and I both have
Arabs and ride in the sweltering southeast. Hot and
humid in a summer that extends from about late April
til early November. We live in the Florida panhandle.
Our horses are used to overnight trail rides / camp
outs when there is just us or whether we're among a
bunch of strange horses. They eat and drink well in
camp and along the trail. They never miss an
opportunity to grab a snack while we're tooling along
and usually drink from any lake or stream we stumble
on.

We've never elyted our horses, but when we decided to
start endurance riding, we began reading up on
conditioning. Over and over, we would see comments
about elyting horses. Being conscientious horse
owners, we started wondering if we were somehow
missing an important part of our horses' needs. We
ride about 3 to 4 times a week, walking, trotting,
sometimes cantering, usually for about 3 to 4 hours.
This includes grazing in an especially yummy patch of
grass or clover and drinking or playing-in-the-water
breaks. Our horses have never acted stressed and have
always eagerly looked for their dinner in the evening.
After reading your response, I'm wondering if we even
need to elyte them!

Thanks for giving me some food for thought!

Esther
