RE: [RC] Joint Suppliments - Snodgrass, Bonnie

I have been very happy with Pro Flex made by Pro Fomula Labs, the folks that make Lyte Now. I also have been using their Vit/Min supplement, Winner's Daily, for years and find it to be an outstanding product and value.

I did a lot of reading about joint supplements and talked with various riders also. Johns Hopkins did a prolonged research project on humans and Glucosamine Sulphate. They measureed the thickness of cartilage in the human knees over a period of years. The participants were selected so they were as similar of a group as possible, age, weight, etc. Of course one group got the placebo. The group on glucosamine sulphate had far less cartilage loss than the placebo group, if I recall the group overall had no loss and in some cases there was improvement. Anyway, I decided to  pick a supplement based on GS.

At the time I had a mare that I had retired from endurance that had arthritic hocks. Ove several years I had used several different major brands of oral supplements and legend shots. The Legend effects would wear off after 6-8 months and although she was also on supplements she always got sore and stiff till she got her shots again. I eventually just quit using a supplement as it just didn't seem to do anything for here. I did switch to monthly Adequan shots with an initial loading period and this was really successful. But since I did retire her and winter was starting I quit giving the adequan at $42 per shot. In late winter I needed to use her again for ponying the new youngster and I did my research then put her on Pro Flex. At this point the Adequan had completely worn off. The Proflex made a very obvious improvement for this mare. Really, really helped, like no other supplement I had tried.

Pro Flex not only has GS as the base but it has numerous other ingredients, several of which are anti-inflamnatory. I've learned that basicly you have to prevent inflammation from starting as this is what leads to the thinning of the joint fluid, dry joints and cartilage breakdown. I feel that even when feeding a supplement as a preventative that you must prevent inflammation from starting. So this type of product must be withdrawn prior to competition to comply with the AERC drup policy. By the way the formula of Pro Flex has recently been changed and some catalogs don't reflect this change.

This is just my personal opinions and thoughts. I personally really like the Pro Formula products and feel the Winner's Daily is a very worthy product also.

Subject: [RC] Joint Suppliments

I am looking for thoughts on what everyone considers good joint suppliments, and why. I did look into the archives, but wasn't able to pinpoint joint suppliments. I was able to get a catch-all for suppliments. I am looking for something that is a preventitive suppliment.

Thanks,
Lori B.
