Re: [RC] Alternative to/Eminence, MO trail ride - ll cole

Well that sounds okay and we're planning on working a competitive ride next weekend but I think I'll let "the wife" keep an eye on my horse while I have the fun and then ride my horse on Sunday.

How's about this for an alternative: Choose an endurance ride that isn't
cramped for parking space. Call the manager and ask if they'd like help
taking the markers down after the ride. Take the family, camp at the
ride. During the ride put husband in charge of "keeping an eye on the
horse" (translates to husband as "dose in this lounge chair please) Keep
kids up fairly late Friday night so they'll sleep through the first 2 vet
checks. After that it's fairly safe to let them run around camp if
they're old enough.

Meanwhile you work in the vet check and make friends with vets. That
afternoon while they're waiting for the straglers to come in ask if
they'd mind if you brought your young horse up for a mock vet exam. You
don't even have to have a vet do it if the vet check area is vacant. Let
the secretary have a little fun imitating the vet. If your horse won't
trot out this is like a training show for dogs...where they think it's a
show, but you get to discipline them if they don't behave. So, if he lags
you can pop him one making him think the same would happen at a real vet
check. >eg<

Sunday morning saddle up and go pull down markers. It's a great
experience for a young horse because he gots stopped & started a lot
instead of just booking down the trail. Go home with a good feeling that
you didn't expose your horse to a bunch of diseased horses that had just
gone through a sale barn. :-))
