[RC] Red Rock (National Championship Pre-Ride) July 5th - Karen

There is still time to enter if you would like to come to the July 5th Red Rock Ride, which is the Pre-Ride to the National Championship Ride that will take place in October.  The July ride is a 25/50/100.  If you can't ride come and help!  Website and details are here:  http://www.aerc.org/nc2003/PreRide.html  (crew and trail maps are now online)

Here is a description of the trail:

RED ROCK RIDE TRAIL DESCRIPTION

There are 3 loops for the 100 mile ride - #1 pink (33 miles), #2 red (37 miles) and #3 yellow (30 miles). The 50 mile ride uses a modified pink #1 loop (24 miles) and a modified yellow #2 loop (26 miles). The 25 mile ride uses the modified pink loop only.

Each ride has a vet check about half way on each loop. The 100's and the 50's have their one hour holds at camp. Four veterinarians will be available throughout the ride. There will be plenty of water on the trail.

The elevation at camp is about 4500 ft. On the pink loop the 100's will climb up to 6000 ft. and 6400 ft. The 50's and 25's will only go up to the 6400 ft. peak. The red loop goes up to 6800 ft. The yellow loop goes up to 6000 ft. The climbs up and down are mostly gradual.

Most of the trails are jeep roads. The pink loop has the most single track trail including one alongside a creek and through the magnificent rock Pinnacles. There will be some gates to open and CLOSE and two cattleguards to AVOID. Twice on the pink loop will riders have to cross Red Rock Rd., which does not have a lot of traffic, but people drive fast on this road. The last few miles of the red and yellow loops travel on dirt roads through a neighborhood. We ask that you respect the homeowners and their property, be courteous to vehicle traffic by staying to the side of the road, and be AWARE of possible loose running dogs.

The ride is in high desert terrain with awesome views of rock formations, mountains and valleys. Vegetation consists mostly of Big Sage, Utah Junipers, Peach Brush, Black Brush and very few grasses. The footing is mostly packed sand, some deep loose sand and very little rocks. Temperatures can vary to extremes.

The ride would be rated as challenging, yet moderately difficult. Locals all agree it is one of the BEST places to ride. The unlimited trails, footing and scenery are great!
