Re: [RC] [RC] Sizing western saddles - QH, SQH, FQH- Help! - sindy mccosker

There is an excellent explanation of how a Western Saddle is made and sized on the Capriola Saddlery website.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [RC] Sizing western saddles - QH, SQH, FQH- Help!

Can someone explain to me how western saddle tree sizes work? We just got a new horse (YAY!). We want to get a synthetic endurance/western saddle for my husband to use on his new horse, a young QH gelding. I have an old saddle that we are using now, but it is too wide for this guy (he's a little weedy right now - kind of narrow through the shoulders and chest, but we expect him to muscle up - which is why we don't want to spend a lot of money right now).

I've always ridden English, so I don't know how these tree sizes work (I'm converting to an endurance model myself, but it's a Sport saddle, so I didn't need to figure out the tree size). I know Arabian trees are supposedly wider - correct? But I don't know the difference between Quarter Horse, Full Quarter Horse, and Semi-Quarter Horse bars. Can someone please explain these to me in terms a former English ride can understand (narrow, medium and wide)?

Thanks!
