Re: [RC] Kicking on the trail (was "Stallions") - Mel Sherman

Sharon--don't feel alone :-) I had a rider a few years ago complain to the RM that my horse had kicked at hers on the trail, and I didn't have a ribbon on him...what she left out was that she had REPEATEDLY bounced her horse off my horse's backside--literally-- in an attempt to slow herself down...and refused to pass, even when I pulled completely off the trail and strongly suggested she continue in FRONT of me, not behind me...about the 5th or 6th time her horse ran into mine, my horse gave him a little warning swat with one hind...didn't even connect...

Being somewhat new to competitive distance riding, I always thought red ribbons
in the tail meant "this horse will definitely kick, if you ride right up her
butt." I found out last weekend that this definition isn't necessarily correct!

I was riding diagonally behind a horse with a red ribbon. I was staying back
at what I considered to be a good bit - 1 or 2 horse-lengths behind, and off to
her right a bit. That mare actually WENT for my horse. She threw her butt
over, slowed down, and actually went out of her way to try to kick Zephyr (who
was minding his own business). She missed, thank goodness, but it wasn't for
lack of trying.

I learned a new respect for red ribbons! From now on, I will never ride within
3-4 lengths of a red-ribboned horse.

I'll stick to my 1-2 lengths for non-ribboned horses... Zephyr doesn't wear a
red ribbon because he doesn't normally kick, but last weekend when a horse came
right up behind him (half a length) and another beside him (1-2 feet away), he
sure felt threatened! If he was ever going to kick, that would have been it.
I immediately spoke to the other riders, and they seemed a bit confused at my
request. I thought it was a reasonable request, personally. *sigh*
