Re: [RC] was Shawnee - now TRAIL ACCESS - Truman Prevatt

It technically is the roll of the National Horse Council to represent horsemen on the national level. The State Horse Councils are chartered to represent horsemen at the state level. The problem is horsemen are a diverse groups and while the Horse Councils do represent horsemen, in the past they have not all considered trail issues as part of their charter. That seems to be changing and part of the change is coming about because of the pressure put on it by the groups like the US Equestrian Trail Coalition (www.us-etc.org).

Studies in the past have shown that equestrians have a tremendous impact on the economy of the states that was the focus of the study. What needs to be done is horseman of all disciplines unite and go in mass to the elected officials and use their economic clout. as soon as we are segregated into different groups we will lose the battle.

What a wonderful and insightful post - and right on the money. I wish Endurance News would run "Membership Drives" for some of these organizations you mention - make it easy to join with tear-out forms right in the magazine. If every member of every equestrian group joined - and got a couple of sympathetic friends to join - we would be a powerful political force to be reckoned with. The extreme environmentalists CAN be stopped when it comes to denying us access to the land. It takes numbers and money and the political savvy to throw that "weight" around effectively. I am relatively new to the horsey-set (LOL) but I worked for many years and with great effect on the pro-gun side of that hot-button topic. My experience there tells me that, while local groups can be effective, a national powerhouse is the best way to go - think the NRA. Right now, today, what NATIONAL organization would you say has the most clout? Someone let me know and I'll join it today - and send in double dues. I challenge ever ridecamper to do the same. :o)
