When we brought the two pony mares and foals here two weeks ago, My 'only' mare Honey stood guard at their paddock fence, went into or was in season., and actually double barreled kicked Champ !# 1 horse, and Ferdinand the bull type of horse. She also 'protected '"Scout" our 2 yr old who was born here, but later 'turned on him and ,kicked at him my husband said. I hve owned her and Rascal 4.5 years now and they have "never Kicked' , much less doubled barreled kicked andy horses brought her or they met.Guess her female protective hormones kicked in. She has since settled in, and is "normal " again. Laurie /Rascal, Honey/ Scout.

I would be worried and concerned about it. My concern would be that the mare
may try to chase a person away from her new best friend, or actually "go
after" a person she want to have leave the donkey. And saying "she would
never do that", won't wash. She is showing you some new to you behavior with
her attitude to this donkey, so she could do all kinds of things she has
never done before. I would make sure she can not get directly to who ever
might be giving the donkey attention.
