I spent a couple of summers traveling across the country going to
rides.  Only a few nights did we have a stall for the horses, usually
at a fairgrounds.

Fairgrounds are good places to stop, even without a stall.  But
sometimes I just camped in open, unfenced fields, and once in a large
gravel parking lot.  I did have a camper, though.
