RE: [RC] re: LD - Teri Hunter

This is pretty much the same as any event. Example: Track and Field. The
shorter the length the faster the speed. Same with Bicycle Riding, Speed
Skating, Snow Skiing and Swimming. This does not happen just in Endurance.
I do LD's and the people I ride with and know that ride up in the front
pack's horses are not 4 year olds. They are very well conditioned and
seasoned (mentally) horses that just have not taken the next step to 50's.
I ride LD's for the pure enjoyment of the sport. Now since I want to take
the next step up to 50's I am working on conditioning my horses more to make
sure they are fit and above all I am fit. My horses are 16.

Teri

Subject: [RC] re: LD

What is it about LD rides that make 'racing' more of a problem
than 'real' endurance rides? Is it the fact that they attract
more novices, or is there something inherent in the distance
itself - does the shorter distance make it possible to
'override' a horse, but the problems don't appear at the vet
checks? Do longer offer more time for 'over riding' to become
apparent and get caught at the vet checks?

If racing LDs is ineveitable, is there any way LDs COULD be made
'safe to race', by having more vets checks or different vetting
criteria?

Just curious.
