Re: [RC] Epm/suppliments/worming? - Heidi Smith

I have gathered some Info. Everyone agrees on the E. Do I still need to
add
folic acid when I switch to the Marquis?(as it is shorter term and it may
not? cause anemia??)

The bug itself causes a depletion in folic acid. Although supplementation
is not as "necessary" with the newer treatments as it was with the older
ones, you still likely have a horse that is low in folic acid, and adding it
will aid in his recovery, since the nervous system needs this vitamin.
(FWIW, my mother--age 84--just saw a neurologist for a tremor. They have
ruled out Parkinsons and some of the really scary possible causes, but one
of the main things prescribed was folic acid, since she likely does not
absorb it as well at her age. It is an IMPORTANT vitamin for neurological
function--NOT just for the prevention of pernicious anemia. So yes, USE it
in EPM cases.)

Daughters trainer/breeder said to give him MSN also. And maybe DMSO shots?

Both help with inflamation. I'd suggest giving the MSM, but save the IV
DMSO for crashes. No point in doing something invasive if the MSM will do.
(BTW, you CAN give DMSO orally as well, although many don't like it.)

He was wormed last with Ivermectin in March 5. I learned not to give
him
Quest/ivermectin with the epm. My vet said go ahead and worm him with
Pancur. What do you think?

Listen to your vet. He knows your management system, your area, etc.
Deworming advice really needs to be tailored to each individual situation.
I concur about not using ivermectin right now, but if he thinks you should
use something at this point, I'd suggest following his advice, since he's
the one "on the scene" who knows your individual situation.

Heidi
