Cate - I've gotten my goldfish from WalMart. They like cooler water, so bring a small cooler chest to put the bag of fish in, and go straight home with them.

I have had goldfish in my water troughs for years and they've never eaten one mosquito larva as far as I can tell, certainly they don't eat enough to stop the production of mosquitos. I'd suggest mosquito fish for that or BT disks. Many other water bugs live in my troughs very happily with the goldfish! Goldfish are omnivorous but need more carbos than other fish, so while they can and do eat bugs they're not the best choice for mosquito control. They do help keep down some types of plant/algae growth in your troughs but not that fine green stuff that colors the water green. Well aerated water and/or regular water cycling will do more to control green water than goldfish will.

Water will get pretty warm in small troughs and warm water will kill goldfish faster than even solid freezing will.

Also, when/if you get little WalMart goldfish, you might be tempted to buy a whole bunch. Keep in mind that goldfish should have 10 - 20 gallons per fish in order to thrive, so if you put many little fish in a horse trough you may wind up with a large die-off as they grow. I've found that 3 fish to a 75 gallon tank is about all a tank will support without feeding them. I'm not sure I'd want to feed the goldfish anyway - I'm not sure how good that would be for horses!
