[RC] So how fit is a pasture horse? - Laurie Durgin

So how fit is a horse that is either on a pasture or turned out 24/7?I wonder if anyone knows how far or long you can ride a horse who mainly hangs around and doesn't get ridden much, ala weekend warriors kind of thing. I know people who trail ride an hour or two or three maybe even most of a day and just get on their horses and ride.(course I remember some who show who kinda do the same thing).
I wonder what the safety factor is , or if it is just fraught with the serious possiblities of causing major injury.
It's all this conditioning stuff I've learned about here.I still remember the girl who jumped her horse over hundred times in an hour one day as I was handwalking a horse at her stable(yes, I counted). And later had the vet out with "mysterious" backproblems on the horse.
Or when we use to go do the local saddle club show and the sand was 6-8"inches deep and people would put their horses in class, after class, when the show ran 12 hours. And they didn't ususally work their horses in that kind of sand.
This might be a good question for those whose spouses only ride with them occasionally. Do you keep their horse fit too? Laurie and Rascal(almost dumped her today, was sure that huge brush pile was going to eat me as I passed. )
