Angela, It's called Ventral edema.  It's an accumulation of fluid along the 
midline in a pregnant mare in late term.  It may be more common in older 
mares, but my mare had it when she was pregnant at 7 yrs old.  I believe it 
is considered more or less normal for some mares, possibly due to the 
overload on their kidneys due to pregnancy.  As someone else mentioned, 
always keep a real close eye on a pregnant mare.  I found the book Blessed 
are the Mares to be an excellent source of information.  jeri
