[RC] Let's see if I can re-tell this so it will be even half as funnyas when I heard it... - sharon1359

OK. So, I'm a real newbie to distance riding. (I can't say Endurance riding
because I haven't yet done an Endurance ride. I have one CTR under my belt
now, from last weekend.)

Anyway, if I'm a newbie, then my Non-Horsey boyfriend is a REAL newbie. He
made me explain what CTRs and Endurance was all about several times, until he
thought he understood pretty well.

Well, while he was at his family's house for Easter, I was at my first CTR.
They are also Not Horse People so when they asked him what I was off doing, he
had to explain.

You have to understand, too, that my boyfriend is a total computer geek (and
proud of it). Picture a guy about 5'7", 150#, roundish face, brown hair and
eyes, button-up shirt, black jeans, and belt with a pager and cell phone on
it. This, for him, is dress-down day. He has a dead-pan sense of humor, so
you have to also picture him keeping a straight face during the whole thing.

OK, so now that the scene is set, this is the conversation he related to me:

Family: What is Sharon off doing this weekend?

Louis: She brought her horse to do a 25 mile Competitive Trail Ride.

Family: What makes it competitive? Is she trying to finish first?

Louis: No, it doesn't matter who finishes first. Because it's not an
Endurance ride, it's not judged on who finishes first but rather on the horse's
endurance. That is, Endurance rides are judged on who wins, but CTRs are
judged on the horse's endurance. I mean, on which one is in the best shape.
But Endurance rides are more competitive, because the winner is the one who
finishes first. <long pause, facial expression changes to confused desperation>

Family: <silence, confused expressions>

Louis: Oh hell, just call her tomorrow night and get her to explain it.

Hope you enjoyed this half as much as I did. I had tears in my eyes I was
laughing so hard when he told me, and I wasn't even there for the original
conversation.

-Sharon (and Zephyr, the barefoot wonder)
