Re: [RC] Spring shots - pectoral muscles - suendavid

Like Heidi, I like IM injections in the pectorals a lot. Good drainage if it
abcesses, lots easier to work out stiffness than the neck and if it does
abscess and leave a dimple, it's virtually unnoticeable. Plus I've had a lot
better luck injecting needle-squeamish horses. Just inject into the heaviest
part of the muscle mass on either side---NOT dead center of the chest---
aspirate to verify you're not in a blood vessel, inject, withdraw and give it a
bit of a rub.

Can I get more details on giving a shot in the
pectoral muscles. I have never heard of this before
and so have never done. Any particular way or place I
should give the shot, or something that I should
avoid, etc.?
I will have at least a WNV shot to give in the next
couple of weeks (the second one).
I've never had problems with neck injections, but then
it takes saying that, to wind up with a major abcess
or something (Murphy's Law on Horses). I would like to
have an alternative site, apart from the butt. I have
heard that butt shots can also be problematic because
you could hit the sciatic nerve...anyone care to
comment?
