[RC] Changing stirrups on a Sports Saddle - Dyane Smith

I have an SS barrel racing style saddle.  I need to change out the barrel racing stirrups for some with a wider base, but the stirrup "leathers" ( can you tell, I'm more used to English saddles) are sewn together.  Since the material is nylon or some other synthetic, I am loath to change anything without being sure I can get it back the way it needs to go.  Has anyone had experience changing out stirrups on this kind of saddle?  What should I do to "reconnect" the leathers after I cut the stitching?  And, on that note, how do you cut stitching on SS leathers?
TIA,
Dyane (very, very unhandy)
