[RC] Shoes vs. Boots for Road Work - Karen Casemier

I plan on conditioning my horse on the dirt roads around our property. These roads are firmly packed, with some gravel. This is going to be my first year doing CTR/endurance (actually, I don't know if I'll make it to anything other than a 15 mile end-of-season ride due to my injury recovery process, but do hope to make it to at least one ride this year).

Do any of you condition on roads? I'm worried about the gravel - there isn't a lot of it, but with pea-sized stones, it seems inevitable that she's going to get something wedged in her frog. I would assume easy boots would be a better choice for this type of work, but I'm not sure.

She's a Morgan with typical Morgan feet - pretty strong. She's fine barefoot for light work or hacking on grass/sand trails. The other area I'll be doing a lot of riding in as at Ionia State Park (western Michigan), which has some rocky areas that will also require some foot protection.

Ideas? I'm going to discuss with my farrier, but would also like to hear your comments.

Thanks!

Karen and Mazzie
