What will help strengthen the coupling is riding figures, i.e., deep and shallow serpentines, figure eights, etc. at sitting trot...keeping the trot rythymic, forward and relaxed.  The bending, stretching and contracting of the loin muscles will result in a stronger back, longer soundness and connection.  I would incorporate this type of exercise twice a week, on good footing for twenty to thirty minutes of varying intensity.
     If it is not a weak coupling issue, check tack, manner of going, shoeing (especially rear shoeing.)
