Re: [RC] Robyn Hood using a balance rien" - Jackie Winkleman

It has been a while since I used one, but I think it
was a stirrup leather that we used. It was in jumping
lessons, and as you say - it was to help the rider
stay "with" the horse:)

You can use a 36" belt or a stirrup leather as a
balance strap. It's not a rein in the scense of
controling a horse. Robyn probably used part of a
rein. Us foxhunters use them all the time (unless
you
ride in a martingale...they we use that). Grabbing
mane works well too.

The balance strap isn't used to "control" the horse
but to help you stay WITH the horse. Sometimes, a
horse will scoot out from underneath you or lunge
over
a gully. The balance strap is to help, even the
most
compentent of riders, keep their balance over rough
terrain and sudden moves forward. Sudden side moves
are still at the mercy of strong legs.

In Trail Blazer, Robyn Hood suggests using a
"balance rein" to control the hard charging,
competitive horse, a rein tied in a loop at the
base
of the horses neck. Can any one give more
instructions: How tight and where is the rein
when
gauging tightness? How best is it used. I ride
with a hackamore, will it still be effective?
