Is an endurance gait what you *want* the pony to learn?

Not necessarily. I just want the pony to learn to stick with me and my mare and I want maggie to get used to controlling her pony safely on the trails. He has a huge trot though that I"ve seen when my adult (small) friends ride him. Since Maggie hasn't learned to post yet I'm not sure that a big trot is best as he gets annoyed when she bounces up and down on him.

Any experience on the trail would be good at this point. I just really want to be safe. He does canter and she does a pretty good job with him, except her legs get all out of line.
