Is an endurance gait what you *want* the pony to learn? For my small
kids I liked a pony who would barely chitzy trot around and then break
into a little canter. We had games set up in the yard: a hoop hanging
from a tree to spear with a stick, cones, jumps, etc. They used to ride
their old pony up under our swingset monkey bars, stop, stand up on the
pony, do a backwards flip back onto the pony (*very* old dormant pony)
That was fun for them. I was the "groundsman". Always handy to reset the
jump and unemcombered by a horse of my own.
My daughters did *think* they wanted to go on real rides with me back
then. The trick was not letting them know what a *real* training ride
was. I took them on one about 2 miles long and let them think that was
what I did. They had a good time, then I dropped them off and let it
rip.
