Re: [RC] [RC] Kicking Colt/ Correcting - Laurie Durgin

Heres three suggestions from my daughter,(from various barns she has worked with) 1)Wear gloves. clip and lead and lounge line to halter, take off lead line off him ,if he starts to wheel and kick, jerk him up and yell "quit" .(not my first choice).2) take treats, give one before you unhalter (so he is eating as you do it), then give another , then let him folow you to gate and give third as you go out. (eh, maybe) 3)always have them face you stand with your gate at back with it slightly open so you can back thru as you realease.(I do this with unknown horses.4)take halter off, with rope around neck, make them wait, then release slowly. Laurie and Rascal(who ususally just wants to walk to the trough and drink)

I have a 2 year old not all the times but sometimes when you un halter him and let him go, say after a walk or something that he is so full of it he kicks as he runs off....
How does one stop this... You are not close enough to him to get him with in the so many second correction mode... I have chased after him and wopped him with the rope, but that can be taken as play.. What is the correct method to nip this. This happened yesterday after the vet had given him his shot......My husband went after him and wopped him with the rope.. still I don't think he is getting the message.

    thanks
    Jerri
