Re: [RC] [RC] [RC-Digest] head lamps - Nancy Mitts

We use the Petzl Duo head light. More expensive, but worth it. We run the wires to a 6 volt battery in a padded fanny pack, for riding 100's, it'll last 6 hours or so.
The low beam gives a wider more diffuse light, Adequate for seeing low limbs up close. You don't have to stay so far behind another rider to keep the light from bothering them. The high beam on narrow focus gives a bright beam with relatively long reach. Great if you're searching for trail markers.
You do have to follow the trail with the light, no looking off to the side, as the horse will follow the light.

If you're always riding in the wide open spaces or with a moon, it's true you might not need a light at all. Under those conditions a light is actually detrimental, you can see better without one.
In the woods and when it's pitch dark, the horses can see better than you can, but in our experience they will travel better with the light.

For roads, I like the red bike lights on the horse. (clipped to the cantle bag. I prefer to keep the headlight on myself, where I can control it's direction & whether it's on or off.

I can't imagine night riding (on purpose) without a light of some kind in case of an emergency.

How does the horse feel about this? Does the bouncing light bother them? How did you train them to get used to the light? I also wonder, is the light more for you or the horse? Don't horses have superior night vision, it's us who can't see worth a flip?
