An "elevator" ride is one where you can "upgrade" to the next distance.
For example, you could enter a 25, but at the finish of the 25, you
could tell the RM that you wanted to upgrade and do the 50. Same thing
is done for other distances. There are sometimes caveats regarding
awards, placings, etc. At least one ride in the SE offers a 50, with an
elevator option to the 75, which is a good option.
