I've got an old movie, can't remember it's name (Outcast?),
starring John Derek, in which Slim Pickens plays "the girl's"
brother----there are some riding scenes in that where Slim (and it's
obviously Slim) is riding full gallop and using both hands to aim/fire his
    rifle. He rides very well.
But for some really exciting scenes---try to find the William S.
Hart movie, Tumbleweeds. Of course, this is a silent movie, but it
features the Oklahoma land race, and William S. and his horse Fritz come
from behind (by about five minutes) and pass everything moving - make a
quick detour to keep a wagon with runaways from going in a gulley, leap
large fallen trees, pass a guy who is riding two horses (leaping from one to
the other - leading the one he is not riding) and "make it in time". This
is really William S and really Fritz. The most exciting thing, I think,
is the fact the quality of the filming is still not too advanced, and
Fritz's legs are nothing but a blur as he is photographed running. Gives
    me goose pimples every time.
