[RC] Sheepskin tanning process? and care - Laurie Durgin

Had a nice suggestion about sheepskin. But was wondering about the tanning process, someone brought up that there may be a difference for the ones made for horse pads, as opposed to one meant for a rug, or to put on a bed ,or  for hospital , nursing home use???????
Are they really different or could they be used for  a saddle pad, regardless of how tanned? Or does everyone use the same process? Or is it like  Indian, Pakistan leathers because of the way they tan the leathers (advice on not buying).?
I did find the care was to wash in woolite ,cool, delicate and then condition the leather side with leather care products. Someone else  suggested you could use Murphy oil soap to wash them in too.
