Re: [RC] Sheath? What sheath? - Heidi Smith

First of all, feral horses out in the wide open spaces are not gelded.  (I'd say that being a gelding is prima facie evidence that the horse has at some point been owned by somebody....)  Being gelded is the first "risk factor" for a dirty sheath, as stallions tend to "exercise their equipment" much more thoroughly.  And the trainer you know has accurately identified another major risk factor--confinement.  Being sedentary and having a dusty environment both lend themselves to dirty sheaths and beans.  Being overweight is also a factor.  So is getting old.  And then there are those horses that just plain and simple are cleaner than others, both due to body chemistry and due to personal habits.

Alright. I feel I know you guys entirely too  well after this thread. We have 3 geldings. Rascal has never been cleaned, other than a warm hose shoved in there , and the 3 times I saw him drop i peeled off  2 o 3 flakes, otherwise he was clean. My 15 month old is as clean as a whistle, well I did peel off 3 flakes, quickly of course. Then my daughter tb. She has to clean him all the time, and and he stinks and is gross. I suspect its like bo, some have it bad, some not at all. Sooo how do mustangs clean themselves? A trainer I know says horses who are stalled seem to have more of a problem.. . .Laurie an Rascal(who is a clean boy, thank heavens!)

In reply to what if you never clean it----my vet has had gelding come into her clinic with maggots in their sheath; inflamed and swollen and I doubt if it could get any grosser than that.  Is that a pretty good reason?  Renie
