can't go that long on a hard ride like the Tevis and just not eat. What should I do? Would protein
    powder drinks work? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem (wish the not wanting to eat thing would last longer than an endurance ride though <g>).  I really like Gu.  Its a liquid (kinda like uncooked cake batter)....this sounds very disgusting, but in reality it works great.  You just rip open the top and squeeze it into your mouth, swallow some water and get an almost immediate perk up.  I also make little PB&J sandwiches, cut up in tiny squares that I can munch down at a trot.  The other thing I've recently discovered is Emergen-C.  I like this stuff because its a powder and you can dump it into nice cold water at a vet check and have a cold e-lyte drink.  Its not so good once it warms up, but works well when cold water is available.  I try to drink a full water bottle every hour too, which gets difficult once the water is warm.  I've tried to condition myself to that icky warm saddle water by leaving water bottles in my truck and drinking them on the road.  Its disgusting...I don't think I'll ever get used to choking warm water down (blech!).

Hope this helps!  We have to take good care of ourselves so we can take care of the keystone part of our team -- the horse!  <g>
