Re: [RC] White Hairs... PLEASE HELP! - Maggie Mieske
Levon,
I started Malik's first season in a saddle that fit well to begin with.
When he stumbled on me mid season, I thought it was deep sand. Then he
stumbed big time on me and really bruised his tendon sheath. He was off for
several weeks after that. I believe his shoulders had muscled up and filled
out to the point that the saddle started pinching him. For a while I
switched to an english saddle that I could adjust somewhat and then later
went back to that saddle with a woolback. Worked well for awhile but I
still got white hairs (which is not easy to pick up on right away with a
young grey horse who has lots of white "spots" as they grey out). Early
this year I was still getting dry spots on those areas, too. So I bought a
Skito Equalizer pad. I noticed the difference right away in how he moved
and there were no more dry spots. I have since ordered a De Soto saddle
from Marilyn Horstmyer. In the meantime I have continued to use my Skito
pad with wonderful results. I think my white hairs came from that first
season but when I saw the dry spots, I decided to take some preventative
measures. The Skito pad seems to be working for me in that capacity. Good
luck but don't beat yourself up...we all make mistakes. What is important
is that we learn from those mistakes and do what we can to make it better
next time. It sounds to me like you are doing that!
Maggie
