Tara says "Not tensing up is the key. Gripping with your legs raises your
    center of
gravity and can sling you out of the saddle."

I have to laugh at this. I tried giving riding lessons to a girl from my
office. She was about 21, very thin and a bit highstrung herself. She did
okay at the walk on the lunge, but when I would ask her to trot, she would
tense her leg muscles and start squirting higher and higher off the horse
with each stride. I would have to keep telling her "Relax, don't grip with
your knees" I could never let her trot for more than about 8 or 10 strides
for fear she would just shoot right off the horse. Also, my horse just HATED
to see her coming. She was a really nice girl, but lucky for my horse, she
    moved away. jeri
