RE: [RC] [RC]Speed Control / bits - Brittany Murphy

Some good suggestions out there! thank you. I do the "kiss my knee" move when he gets it in his head to run away with me. That's if I catch it in time before it's a full-out gallop, otherwise I'm yanking on his mouth until he slows up enough to crank his head around. It's amazing how fast he can move with his head sideways! I'm usually holding my breath hoping he doesn't trip! I don't like doing this, to me it's just to dangerous to try and stop him this way. Like I said, it works great if I can catch him before...
I actually spent about 2-3 miles spinning circles like this on the last part of a loop back to camp at a ride this spring. (yes, I think there was some spring fever/first-ride-of-the-year adrenaline involved) It was only 25 miles into a 50 and I was more tired than I'd ever been after a ride from fighting him, I almost RO'd out of that one. I had absolutely no control, everytime I'd give him the chance to behave and move forward sanely, he'd take off again.
I wonder about the method of letting him go, then making him keep going... if my horse only does the speed freak thing on the way back home, or when getting racey with another horse, do I really want to let him go? Will he think he just gets to take off and get home faster? Or urge his competitiveness with other horses?
    Brittany
