When I have a question regarding vetting, I will always ask what are they doing and why. I asked a vet why they were not listening to gut sounds and his response was " with that generator running over there I can't hear them, so by offering hay, I can actually see if they are interested in eating. If they are not showing interest, I will concerned that there is a problem, and want to know if they are different to you ect." You know that made alot of sense. If my horse isn't quite right or isn't showing signs of being interested in eating, especially at the third VC, I will be concerned, because that is not normal. On the other hand, if they present with a face full of hay, or slop and pulling me around to eat, I would be inclined to think they are doing OK in that area. Also, if the vet asks you, the rider, " are they eating and drinking good out there?" don't tell them what they want to hear, be honest, they are relying on you for those other pieces of the puzzle. I am not saying people don't tell them the truth, people have a tendency to get caught up in the momment and answer "oh,yeah, there drinking great". When it was only 3-5 gulps. (been there, done that) It boils down to knowing what is normal for your horse.
