Re: [RC] Crupper - Laurie Durgin

I guess God protects ignorant fools, since I just put my crupper on Rascal and rode him , up and down hills. I think he was too busy  going down the hill trying to balance me and watch where he was going to notice. By the way , I never trained him to a breastplate either. I did do some despooking with ropes and lines all over him and he was used to being ground driven and lunged.  Laurie and Rascal

If it were me and the hill was steep enough that the crupper was going
to engage, I'd be off on the ground jogging down leading the horse. On a
hill that steep you can't go any faster on horseback than you can on
foot and sure saves a lot of wear and tear on the horse's legs.

Many moons ago at the Biltmore ( the very first Biltmore), Lawton
Johnston had one loop to go in the 100.  The horse had a small rub in
the girth area but otherwise was fine. Lawton didn't want to make it any
worse so he rummaged through the tack compartment in his trailer and
found a crupper. He rode the last loop without a girth using a breast
collar and crupper to keep the saddle in place.  We basically sit him on
his horse when he left and took him off when he finished. He told us
later that was the first time that mare had seen a crupper. So you might
try riding them 90 miles before you put it on:-).

    >How do you train a horse to accept a crupper?  I had thought about putting it on the horse and longing till the bucking is over, but how do you prepare a horse for the 1st time they go down a steep hill with a saddle and rider and all that weight is pulling on their tail?
