My experience also, except mine have not cracked (yet?).  I bought them months
ago, and they are still very stiff and almost painful to wear.  They also tend to
put my feet to sleep if I wear them on really long rides.  I couldn't wear the
next biggest size though, because my foot was sliding all around.  I think they
are just using cheaper, less supple leather or something, that doesn't give and
conform to the foot as well.
