PHF

I had a horse get phf about 6 years ago when we were living in Va.  I had 3 horses at the time and only 1 horse got sick.  He had been vaccinated and had just a mild case, a fever and diarrhea, treated with IV antibiotics, Tetra , I think.  The vet drew blood before treating and about 3-4 weeks after I think, sent it to U. of Md. as they were doing a study at that time and the lab work was free.  His titers did prove that he had PHF but you need to start treatment if you suspect the disease before waiting for the blood test results to come back.  I was competing this horse at this time and he was in very good condition.  Haven't heard much about the disease in our area Va. Md. after the first couple of years when they were trying to figure out the disease so I would think that vaccinating has helped.  There were a lot of deaths from PHF in this area in the beginning.    Louise
