aussie saddles, long

From:  "Erin McCrary" <emac_hubbs@hotmail.com>

I took my horse to the vet on Tuesday for a recheck ultra sound . . .  My horse is exceptionally wide in the withers and shoulders, and short in her back witch slopes up toward her hind end.  I complained that I'm having trouble fitting western and endurance saddles to her back.  Most seem too bridge a lot or there is too much pressure on her withers or loins.  He said she may never be able to be ridden in any saddle other than an english saddle due to the bridging and her width at her withers.  English saddles are fine, but I don't care form them when I'm riding down steep hills and occasionally Fancy likes to get in a buck or two when I have her cross an obstacle that she is unsure of.  I'm thinking of trying an aussie type saddle.

Erin,
I can't help you on the aussie saddle, but I rode for most of my life with an english saddle, but found with a new horse and trying to condition for distance riding, that the saddle was not stable or secure enough for those occasional bucks.  I also found it miserable when doing a lot of downhill riding.  You might want to contact Anne George.  I went with one of her saddles and I find it to be the perfect "cross" between english and western.  Now my horse sounds like the opposite body build- narrow withers and longish back (well actually, just not short), but I think it would be worth at least an inquiry.  You may already know her, but if not, she has been doing endurance riding and building saddles for a LONG time and has a lot of experience fitting difficult-to-fit horses.  I don't blame you for wanting to look for something other than an english saddle.  It's funny- I thought my old trusty english saddle was the greatest--- until I rode 20 miles in the mountains on it!  Good luck! (I think Annie is at the finish for the XP ride, but she should be back home in a few days.)
